Meet your Root Chakra
The Root Chakra is one of your seven primary energy centers. The Sanskrit word for the Root Chakra is Muladhara.
Up and down your spinal column, you have yin and yang energy that spirals around each other, intersecting at vortex centers called chakras.
A vortex of calming energy, this chakra is located at the base of your spine and creates your connection with the earth.
“Blame it all on my Roots…”
All your chakras are important: individual and yet a team. This Chakra is one that I spend a lot of time talking to clients about. Mainly because it’s our energetic foundation, our energetic anchor; it’s the chakra that, when properly grounded like a deep, healthy tree root, also gives us the ability to soar.
Grounding means you are in the moment, calm, fully present, seeing with clarity, and not reactive or judgmental. By anchoring to the moment, we can see with clarity and calm receiving the best solution to a situation without emotional reactions we may regret later.
Balanced Root Chakra
The foundation of Root Chakra energy starts with our primal needs and survival instincts. These include breathing, food, water, shelter, clothing, sleep, and safety, as described in Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. When these things feel threatened, we can feel uprooted, anxious, and fearful.
Often, when we go through transitions (marriage, parenthood, change of job, relocating, death, divorce, retirement, change in friendships/relationships, injuries…), our root chakra becomes unbalanced because we have not been taught how to ground and find comfort in the transition.
Balanced root chakras allow us to recognize an emotion as a signal, process it, and RELEASE IT.
Emotions are not meant to be held onto. However, we create narratives that make us feel like if we let it go, then it will happen again. We forget to trust and we find ourselves is a repetitive loop or surviving and not thriving.
When our root chakra is balanced, we feel safe, calm, in the moment, trustful, balanced, secure, and supported.
Unbalanced Root Chakra
The unbalanced Root Chakra means you are that unbalanced. It isn’t easy to have a calm response to a situation when you are busy trying to find your footing. Narcissists love keeping people off balance.
Unbalanced root chakra energy presents as anxiety, depression, stress, greed, hoarding, and spending energy on acquiring material things. When we spend energy in the past or future, we are no longer in the moment.
Creating Root Harmony
The root chakra signals it is in harmony when we feel calm, patient, accepting of family history, able to stand up for ourselves, connected to nature, and a willingness to explore our spiritual growth.
As we set our intentions on the root chakra, we release and let go of thoughts and habits that no longer serve us. This can take some time as we explore the events that have left us feeling off-balanced.
It might even take some time to recognize you are off balance because you’ve survived for so long it feels normal.
As we practice grounding, we begin to find moments of clarity and calm. As this chakra heals, it reciprocates by encouraging our growth with a sense of safety around exploring the emotions we need to release.
We trust that we are safe in bringing these emotions into our awareness. Feeling at peace, we are not looking for something to go wrong. We see events as they are happening for what they are and not personal attacks happening to us but signs to show us where we need to do the work.
Where to begin
You can begin with your breath. Bringing your attention to your breath physically signals to your body you are safe, mentally brings you back to the present, and spiritually signals your support team.
Then, bring your attention to your feet. When you exhale, imagine that whatever is knocking you off balance flows out the bottom of your feet into the earth. Mother Earth has weathered many storms; she is a strong ally and can compost anything.
Repeat an affirmation:
- In this moment I am grounded and stable.
- I am calm.
- I trust the process of life.
- I am at home wherever I am.
Spend time outside with the intention of connecting with your root chakra.
